Hillsboro Early Childhood Center

The Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) provides special education, instructional services and technological support to the 20 school districts in Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook and Washington Counties. The project is a complete renovation and addition of an outdated education facility that houses the Early Childhood Intervention Center. The center offers regional programs for young children with learning disabilities. The building is designed to fit in with the existing houses to the north while recognizing the institutional context of the hospital buildings to the southeast. The character of the new building has a Northwest feel and sits well within the historic neighborhood. Because the project was funded using “stimulus” dollars, it required a fast track approach to meet federal deadline requirements. This required early negotiations with the City of Hillsboro for both planning and building permit processes. The site is part of the City’s master plan area and the strict design guidelines required us to develop a compromise between the City requirements and the neighborhood’s wishes.
