Student Health and Counseling Center
With considerable growth in the student population, the existing 1960’s era student health building at Western Oregon University had been struggling to serve student needs and meet today’s standards for care. Soderstrom designed a new two-story clinic that addresses the university’s current and projected requirements for student health services in appropriately sized spaces. The main program elements include medical services – healthcare provider offices, exam rooms, and a lab – on the first floor, with counselor offices, wellness education offices, a conference/training room, and work spaces on the second level. This configuration allows for privacy for the counseling offices on the second floor. The new building location is intentionally offset to create a plaza for student activities. It connects with existing buildings on campus by incorporating common campus materials, masonry and stucco, in its exterior envelope.
