Connecting to
the River Environment

University Boathouse

With the completion of the new boathouse, University of Portland is now one of the few schools in the country to have their own boathouse on campus. As part of the University’s Franz River Campus expansion, the building provides direct access to the Willamette River and finally gives the women’s rowing team a home of their own. The boathouse holds 24 boats and includes exercise machines, a locker room, and showers. Additionally, the facility houses lab spaces for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Environmental Science program, including a flume lab that will source water directly from the Willamette.

The boathouse was designed in traditional shingle style, with dormer windows that help bring the building scale down. Extensive daylight and exposed wood in the building further create a sense of warmth and comfort, as well as a connection to the outdoors.
