Good design enhances the human experience and encourages academic and personal growth. For most students, a college campus is a life changing and immersive experience. Our role as architects is to design environments that encourage the best possible experience.

Dundon Berchtold Hall

Recently awarded the 1st Place award at the DJC Top Projects Awards, Dundon Berchtold Hall is first new academic building at the University of Portland in over 20 years. The new building is adjacent to two traditional campus icons: Romanaggi Hall, a building with traditional pointed arches, and Waldschmidt Hall, built in 1891 and the oldest building on campus. As a result, the design team chose a classic, collegiate Gothic expression to complement the neighboring buildings and enhance the distinct sense of place on campus.

From Our Clients

Academic Buildings

These include spaces for traditional lectures, active learning, conferences, small seminars, basic and applied research, science and engineering labs and maker spaces. These are the critical core of the university.

Housing & Dining

Student life for Gen Z is very different from the past. New forms of housing and new approaches to food service have to keep up with student sensibilities to attract and retain students.

Student Services

These fall into two categories. The first includes those that enhance student health, personal growth and widening of their physical and emotional horizons. Indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, health clinics, game rooms, museums, practice facilities for music, theater and art all fall into this category. The other category is the interface between the student and the university. The registrar, financial aid, admissions, academic and career advising, work study programs and similar services are typical.

Operations Facilities

Campus support facilities include central heating and cooling plants, maintenance centers, warehouses, and facilities for storage and repair of campus vehicles.

Master Planning

Facilities master plans can include assessments of existing buildings and infrastructure, projections of capital repair and replacement events, planning for changing student body characteristics, planning for changes in academic programs, pedagogical approaches or laboratory technology. Plans are often used for funding campaigns and may also be required by local jurisdictions.

Higher Education Team

Our team has years of experience higher education environments for public and private institutions. Whether new builds or renovations, we bring the latest thinking on everything from new arrangements that encourage active learning to new sustainability techniques for net zero energy use.
